The Elder Futhark, used for writing Proto-Norse, consists of 24 runes that often are arranged in three groups of eight; each group is referred to as an Ætt. It was a writing system used by Germanic tribes for Northwest Germanic dialects in the Migration Period, the dates of which are debated among scholars. I’m trying to give my 15 yr old grandson some knowledge into his Nordic (Viking) heritage and this info makes it much more real.Really helpful in satisfying my curiosity about the runes.
